St. Mary of the Woods Grabs First Win of Tourney Over VUL

St. Mary of the Woods took advantage of a sloppy Virginia University-Lynchburg defense and grabbed a 12-1 win in the loser's bracket of the 2013 USCAA Softball National Championships.

The Pomeroys hammered out nine hits en route to the five inning win, improving to 1-1 on the week and dropping VUL to 0-2. The Dragons will play Penn State Mont Alto at 2:00 p.m. on the Pony Field in the ninth place game, while St. Mary of the Woods awaits the loser of Carlow/Ave Maria.

St. Mary of the Woods took a 3-0 lead in the top of the second, then added two more runs in the third to make it 5-0. Another five runs in the fourth gave the Pomeroys a 10-0 advantage before VUL could manage a run in the bottom of the fourth. Two runs in the fifth gave St. Mary of the Woods an 11-run lead and the win after five.

Seven Pomeroy players had at least one RBI, as Shelby Turner and Kelsey Rosselli led the charge with two apiece. Jennifer Faker picked up the win for St. Mary of the Woods, topping Kayln Weibel who took her second loss in as many games for the Dragons. Faker struck out 11 of the 18 batters she faced, retiring the first nine batters she faced before walking the leadoff batter in the fourth.

St. Mary of the Woods plays on Tuesday at 12:00 p.m. on the Pony Field for a chance to advance in the loser's bracket.
