FINAL SCORE: #8 Penn State Beaver - 1, #10 Penn State Brandywine - 3

RECORDS: Penn State Beaver (26-23) | Penn State Brandywine (24-17)

LOCATION: Firestone Stadium in Akron, Ohio

IN BRIEF: Penn State Brandywine got on the score board early, scoring runs in both the bottom of the first and second innings.  Brandywine added another run in the bottom of the fifth inning to take a 3-0 lead.  Beaver, who was held scoreless despite leaving runners on the bases in all but one inning, finally got on the board in the top of the seventh, but they weren’t able to tie the game as Brandywine hung on to win by a final score of 3-1.

HOW THEY SCORED: Brandywine started the game with a leadoff single from Arianna Segich who would score on a sacrifice bunt from Robyn Gannon in the first.  Brandywine added a second run in the second as Julie Foeldes hit a leadoff triple and scored on a Grace DeRosa groundout.

Segich scored again in the fifth inning on an error by Beaver, giving Brandywine a 3-0 lead.

In their last at bat, Beaver’s first two batters reached safely and a stolen base by Searra Thumm put runners on the corners.  Vanessa Jackson hit a sacrifice fly to score Thumm, making the score 3-1 which would be the final score of the game as Brandywine forced Beaver to leave two runners on base to close the game.

BEHIND THE BOX SCORE: Brandywine was led by their starting pitcher, Katie DeStefano who limited Beaver to just two hits in the game.  Offensively, she saw support from Segich who went 2 for 3 and Julie Foeldes who went 1 for 2 with a triple to lead off the second inning. 

Beaver’s hits came off the bats of Brenna Cepull and Jenna Petrucci, with Petrucci hitting a double in the sixth.  On the mound was Vanessa Jackson who threw the complete game facing 25 batters, striking out 5 and giving up 4 hits.

NEXT UP: Brandywine stays alive in the loser’s bracket, facing the loser of the #2 Carlow, #6 Penn State Hazleton matchup at 6:00 pm tonight.  Beaver will compete in the 7th place game this afternoon against the loser of the #3 NHTI and #9 Cleary University game.  The seventh place contest is scheduled for 4:00 pm this afternoon.

 

FINAL SCORE: #3 NHTI - 4, #9 Cleary University - 1

RECORDS: NHTI (26-3) | Cleary University (12-27)

LOCATION: Firestone Stadium in Akron, Ohio

IN BRIEF:  After a stalemate through five innings, NHTI put up a four run sixth inning, stringing together 5 hits.  Cleary University was held scoreless until their final at bat in the bottom of the seventh when they managed one run, but couldn’t continue the rally as they fell by a final score of 4-1.

HOW THEY SCORED: Madison Pellerin started the sixth with a leadoff walk and advanced to third on a double from Kate Andritz.  Danyel McNicholas hit a 2 RBI single to score both Pellerin and Andritz, giving NHTI the 2-0 lead.  Molly Emerson earned the next RBI for NHTI, scoring McNicholas.  The final run of the inning came off of the bat of Hannah Seidner who doubled to left center, scoring Emerson for the 4-0 lead.

Cleary led off the 7th with a double from Ashley Valle.  She was batted in by Megan Baumgartner who singled to left field for the lone RBI for the Cougars. 

BEHIND THE BOX SCORE: NHTI was led by Jenna Beaulieu and Molly Emerson who each had two hits in the game as both ladies are hitting over .400 in the tournament.  McNicholas led the team in RBI’s with two, while batting an even .300 this week. 

Tori Lemay was in the circle for the Lady Lynx throwing all seven innings and giving up only five hits with a tournament ERA of .41.

The Cleary University Cougars were led by catcher Megan Baumgartner who went 1 for 3 with 1 RBI. 

On the mound to start for the Cougars was Adrian Emanuelson throwing 5.2 innings giving up 7 hits.  She was relieved by Olivia Silvestri who threw 1.1 innings giving up an additional 2 hits.

NEXT UP: NHTI will now advance to play to loser of game 12 between #1 St. Mary of the Woods and #5 College of St. Joe’s – Vermont.  That game is scheduled for 8:00 pm tonight in Firestone Stadium.  Cleary, taking their second loss of the tournament, will face #8 Beaver in the 7th place game at 4:00 pm, a rematch of the first round game.

 

FINAL SCORE: #2 Carlow - 3, #6 Penn State Hazleton - 2

RECORDS: Carlow University (29-12) | Penn State Hazleton (24-15)

LOCATION: Firestone Stadium in Akron, Ohio

IN BRIEF:  Penn State Hazleton jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a double to right center field.  From the bottom of the first inning to the top of the seventh, the game was a defensive battle, neither team conceding a run.  Carlow rallied in the bottom of the seventh inning to come back and win on a walk off throwing error by Penn State Hazleton, 3-2.

HOW THEY SCORED: To open the game, with one out, Penn State Hazleton’s Samantha Varela hit a 2 RBI double to score Sara Stauffer and Vanessa Michael who reached after being hit by a pitch and walked respectively. 

In the bottom of the seventh, Carlow’s Madison Miller opened with a single to center field.  Sofia Papagerge, who pinch hit for Haley Stedeford, flew out for the first out in the inning.  The third batter, Marla Small was walked to put two runners on with the short stop Kelsey Geyer at the plate.  Geyer hit an RBI single to narrow the score to 2-1, as Small advanced to third on an error by the center fielder.  Kenzie Young kept the Celtics alive, singling to the short stop to score Small and tie the game at 2-2.  Allison Hyradil, batting clean-up for Carlow, reached safely on a throwing error by Penn State Hazleton allowing Geyer to score on the play, ending the game in a walk off, 3-2. 

BEHIND THE BOX SCORE: The Celtics were led offensively by Kenzie Young who went 3 for 4 with 1 RBI.  She was followed by Kelsey Geyer and Madison Miller who each had two hits in the game, Geyer with 1 RBI.  Allison Hyradil, who went 0-4, reached safely on the throwing error by the Hazleton third baseman to allow the winning run to score in the bottom of the seventh inning. 

Coming in in relief for Carlow early in the game was pitcher Danielle Levato who threw the final 6.2 innings giving up just 2 hits. 

Penn State Hazleton’s number one pitcher, Kayla Rhome, threw the total 6.1 innings for the Lady Lions giving up 8 hits but only one earned run in the game. 

Offensively, Hazleton had three hitters with 1 hit a piece as Samantha Varela earned both of the Lions RBI’s in the game. 

NEXT UP: #6 Penn State Hazleton now drops into the loser’s bracket to face PSUAC rival, #10 Penn State Brandywine at 6:00 pm.  Carlow University will advance into the quarterfinal game tomorrow where they will face the winner of #1 St. Mary of the Woods and #5 College of St. Joe’s – Vermont.  Tomorrow’s game is slated for 4:00 pm.  

 

FINAL SCORE: #4 University of Maine-Presque Isle - 4, #7 Penn College – 3

RECORDS: University of Maine-Presque Isle (25-14) | Penn College (17-21)

LOCATION: Firestone Stadium in Akron, Ohio

IN BRIEF: The ninth place game between #4 University of Maine-Presque Isle and #7 Penn College turned into an extra inning affair. In one of closest contested games of the tournament, UMPI prevailed in nine innings by a score of 4-3.

HOW THEY SCORED: Penn College took the early lead in the second inning. Elizabeth Asher led off the inning with a double. Nicole Lo Furno followed with a single to advance Asher to third, who would eventually score on a single from Samantha Hill. University of Maine-Presque Isle responded with a run in the bottom of the sixth inning. A single from Katie Patenaude led off the frame. She would advance on a groundout and eventually score on one of Penn College's three errors.  

In extra innings, Penn College started with a runner on second based on tiebreaker rules. That runner, Hill, advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on a single from Taylor Krow. After a stolen base from Krow, an RBI single from Kelsey Gantz made the score 3-1 in favor of Penn College.

University of Maine-Presque Isle would respond again. Patenaude was placed on second to start the inning, but thrown out at home on a single from Sara Packard. Packard would then score on an error after a single from Nicole Marucci, who would come across later in the inning on an RBI groundout to tie the game. In the ninth, again with a runner starting on second, a sacrifice fly from Dalynn Jacobs completed the victory.    

BEHIND THE BOX SCORE: University of Maine-Presque Isle was led by Hannah Williams who went 4-5 in the contest. Packard, the UMPI starting pitcher, went the distance allowing just three runs in eight innings of work.

The top eight hitters in the Penn College lineup tallied hits in the contest, with Hill, Krow, and Gantz providing the RBI's. Amanda Kustanbauter pitched 7.1 innings, not allowing an earned run and tallying 4 strikeouts.

NEXT UP: University of Maine-Presque Isle finishes its season with 25 wins. Penn College ends its campaign 17-21.

 

FINAL SCORE: #8 Penn State Beaver - 0, #9 Cleary University - 9

RECORDS: Penn State Beaver (26-24) | Cleary University (13-27)

LOCATION: Firestone Stadium – Pony Field in Akron, Ohio

IN BRIEF:  Cleary University opened the scoring in the game in the bottom of the first inning, scoring one run.  In their third inning at bat, Cleary tallied eight more runs, bringing the score to 9-0, which would be the final score after the game was ended by the mercy rule in the fifth inning.

HOW THEY SCORED: Cleary’s second batter, Tara Smith, doubled in her at bat and stole third.  Ashley Valle, hit into a fielder’s choice allowing Smith to score the first run for Cleary in the bottom of the first inning. 

In the third inning Kaitlin Dormire doubled and then scored after an error by Beaver in Ashley Valle’s at bat.  Paige Eastman was the next Cougar to double, scoring Valle, bringing the score to 3-0.  The double’s continued to come as Allie Newcomb hit a 3-RBI double scoring Olivia Silvestri, Eastman and Sam Adams.  With two outs in the inning, Cleary batted through their order and in Dormire’s second at bat she hit an RBI single, scoring Newcomb and extending the Cleary lead to 9-0. 

BEHIND THE BOX SCORE: Junior, Brooke Edmonds went an impressive 4 for 4 in the game, leading the team in hits.  Both Kaitlin Dormire and Allie Newcomb had 3 RBI’s, leading the team in that statistical category. 

On the mound for the Cougars to start the game was Olivia Silvestri who threw a one-hitter in her four innings pitched, striking out four batters.  She was relieved by Jaqueline Wood who threw the final inning of the game.

Penn State Beaver’s lone hit in the game came off the bat of senior, Rachael Charlier who was 1 for 2 in the game.   

NEXT UP: With the victory, Cleary University claims the 7th place finish in their first USCAA Softball Championship Tournament as Penn State Beaver heads home with the 8th place finish.

 

FINAL SCORE: #1 St. Mary of the Woods - 9, #5 College of St. Joseph's-VT – 1

RECORDS: St. Mary of the Woods (29-6) | College of St. Joseph's-VT (23-16)

LOCATION: Firestone Stadium in Akron, Ohio

IN BRIEF: St. Mary of the Woods jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first three batters and never looked back. The Pomeroy's defeated College of St. Joseph's-Vermont by a score of 9-1 in six innings.

HOW THEY SCORED: For St. Mary of the Woods, Emma Riffe walked to lead off the game before back-to-back home runs from Sarah Burnham and Marlee Yeager gave them a 3-0 advantage. The Pomeroys' would tack on two more in the second on RBI singles from Burnham and Yeager. St. Mary of the Woods added a fourth run in the fourth inning on a Kerri Schrock double that scored Yeager.

College of St. Joseph's-Vermont got on the board in the sixth inning. Allison Hinton led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on an error. She would move to third on a groundout, and then scored on a sacrifice fly from Sierra Jaeger.

St. Mary of the Woods started off the sixth inning with a walk from Burnham. Two batters later, Schrock was hit by a pitch. Kelly Combs followed with a single that scored Burnham. Pinch-hitter Mariah Stout and Nicole Niespodziany walked, allowing Schrock to score. An RBI single from Kindra Gingerich scored the final Pomeroy run.

BEHIND THE BOX SCORE: Burnham, the USCAA Player of the Year, reached in three of her four plate appearances, recorded three RBI's, and pitched a complete game on the mound. Burnham allowed just 3 hits and gave up one unearned run in the game. Yeager was 2-3 in the game with the solo home run and 2 RBI's. Gingerich also went 2-3 in the game and added an RBI.

For College of St. Joseph's-Vermont, Hinton, Maggie Miller, and Karlee Moore recorded the only hits in the contest.

NEXT UP: St. Mary of the Woods will advance to the winner's bracket finals where they'll face #2 Carlow University on Wednesday at 4:00 PM at Firestone Stadium. College of St. Joseph's-Vermont will shift to the elimination bracket where they'll face conference foe #3 NHTI at 8:00 PM on Tuesday. 

 

FINAL SCORE: #6 Penn State Hazleton - 0, #10 Penn State Brandywine - 2

RECORDS: Penn State Hazleton (24-16) | Penn State Brandywine (25-17)

LOCATION: Firestone Stadium in Akron, Ohio

IN BRIEF:  Penn State Brandywine scored one in the second inning to take the early lead.  After two scoreless innings, Brandywine tacked on their second and final run of the game in the fifth inning, bringing the score to 2-0 which would end up being the final score as Penn State Hazleton was held to only two hits in the contest.

HOW THEY SCORED: In the top of the second inning Penn State Brandywine’s Steph Harvey was hit by a pitch in the first at bat.  A groundout by Julie Foeldes advanced Harvey to second to put her in scoring position.  Katy Steffen then hit an RBI single to the short stop to put the first run of the game on the board. 

The first batter in the fifth inning for Penn State Brandywine, Arianna Segich,singled on a bunt down the third base line and advanced to second on a sacrifice by Julia Allman.  Segich then stole third and scored on a squeeze bunt laid down by Robyn Gannon.  

BEHIND THE BOX SCORE: Penn State Brandywine was led by Katy Steffen and Robyn Gannon who both went 2 for 3 with an RBI in this evenings contest. 

Taking the win from the circle was Grace DeRosa who threw a 2-hitter and striking out four. 

Penn State Hazleton’s fourth and fifth batters, Samantha Varela and Kaitlyn Kaluzny, each went 1 for 3 in the game while Sara Stauffer was on the mound throwing all seven innings.    

NEXT UP: Penn State Brandywine, who continues to battle their way through the loser’s bracket, will move on to face the winner of tonight’s 8:00 pm game, #3 NHTI vs #5 College of St. Joe’s – Vermont.  Penn State Hazleton still has life in the bracket as well, playing tomorrow at 12:00 pm for 5th place against the loser of tonight’s 8:00 pm game.

LOCATION: Firestone Stadium in Akron, Ohio

IN BRIEF:  NHTI opened the game scoring three runs on three hits in the top of the first inning.  They expanded their lead to 7-0 in the fourth inning on three consecutive hits including back to back doubles.  In the top of the sixth inning, the Lady Lynx sealed the win with a single run as they hung on in the final at bat of the Lady Saints in the bottom of the inning to win by mercy rule, 8-0. 

HOW THEY SCORED: NHTI loaded the bases to start the game and scored their first run on a sacrifice hit by Jenna Beaulieu, scoring Emma Gagnon.  The next batter, Danyel McNicholas, hit a 2 RBI single to left field scoring Kate Andritz and Madison Pellerin.

In the top of the fourth inning NHTI grew their lead to 7-0, scoring 4 runs on 5 hits.  With one out, Alyssa Columb doubled and then advanced to third on a single by Hannah Seidner.  With 2 runners in scoring position and two outs, Pellerin singled scoring both baserunners to give NHTI a 5-0 lead.  Back to back doubles by Kate Andritz and Jenna Beaulieu resulted in the final two runs of the inning, NHTI on top 7-0.

The Lady Lynx scored the final run in the game in the top of the sixth inning on a Molly Emerson single to score Andritz who singled in her at bat.  With the 8-0 lead, NHTI held the College of St. Joe’s scoreless to win in six innings by the mercy rule. 

BEHIND THE BOX SCORE: Three Lady Lynx had 2 RBI’s a piece in the game led by Madison Pellerin and Jenna Beaulieu who both went 2 for 3 and Kate Andritz who went 2 for 4.  Also with 2 hits in the game was Alyssa Columb who was 2 for 2.  All nine of the starting batters for NHTI had at least one hit in the game, as the Lady Lynx tallied 13 total hits, 3 shy of the tournament record.

In the circle was Hannah Seider, throwing the six inning shutout, facing 25 batters.

The College of St. Joe’s was led by Emily Johnson and Karlee Moore who each went 2 for 3 in the contest.    

NEXT UP: NHTI, who continues to battle their way through the loser’s bracket, advances to face #10 Penn State Brandywine in the 2:00 pm game on Wednesday, May 18th.  The #5 Lady Saints draw #6 Penn State Hazleton in the 5th place game set to take place at 12:00 pm on Wednesday.
