FINAL SCORE: #7 Penn College - 3, #10 Penn State Brandywine - 5

RECORDS: Penn College (17-18) | Penn State Brandywine (22-16)

LOCATION: Firestone Stadium in Akron, Ohio

IN BRIEF: The Penn State Brandywine Lady Lions were able to get an early lead on Penn College, scoring in each of their first three at bats.  Penn College would rally in the fourth and fifth innings to bring the game within two runs, but Brandywine’s pitching and defense were able to hold off the late surge as Brandywine went on to win, 5-3.

HOW THEY SCORED: Penn State Brandywine opened up the scoring in the top of the 1st inning as Arianna Segich singled, stole second and eventually scored on a wild pitch after advancing to third on a Julie Allman sacrifice. 

Brandywine expanded their lead to 3-0 in the second inning when Katy Steffen and Julie Foeldes scored on a Julie Allman single to right field after Foeldes reached on an error and Steffen reached on a fielder’s choice.

In the third inning, Brandywine added another pair of runs on an RBI double from Foeldes, scoring Steph Harvey who reached on a fielder’s choice.  Their second run came off of a Steffen single to left center, scoring Foeldes. 

Penn College got on the board in the bottom of the fourth when Taylor Brooks doubled, scoring Taylor Krow and Samantha Hill who both walked in their at bats. 

In the bottom of the fifth inning, Penn College cut their deficit to two runs as Elizabeth Asher scored on a fielder’s choice in Samantha Hill’s at bat.  Asher reached on an error by the short stop and advanced to second on a throwing error.

The final two innings remained scoreless as the defense and pitching of Brandywine were enough to hold off Penn College for the 1st round win.

BEHIND THE BOX SCORE: In the first inning, Penn State Brandywine scored 5 runs on 9 hits while holding Penn College scoreless through the first three innings of play.  They were led by Katie DeStefano who went 3 for 3 and Julie Allman who went 2 for 3 with a team leading 2 RBI’s.  Eight of the nine Brandywine batters contributed at least one hit in the game. 

Penn College was led by Taylor Brooks who went 1 for 4 with two RBI’s and Taylor Krow who went 1 for 2.  The defense for Penn College gave up just one error in the game.

NEXT UP: Penn State Brandywine advances in the winners bracket to face #2 Carlow University tonight at 6:00 pm.  Penn College is still alive in the tournament but moves to the loser’s bracket.  They will face the loser of the #3 NHTI vs #6 Penn State Hazleton game to be played this afternoon at 4:00 pm.

 

FINAL SCORE: #8 Penn State Beaver - 0, #9 Cleary University - 10

RECORDS: Penn State Beaver (25-22) | Cleary University (12-25)

LOCATION: Firestone Stadium in Akron, Ohio

IN BRIEF: The Cleary University Cougars took an early 5-0 lead after 2 innings, scoring 2 in the second and 3 in the third.  After a scoreless third, Cleary expanded their lead by 5 additional runs to end the game by mercy rule after the bottom of the 5th inning, winning 10-0.

HOW THEY SCORED: Cleary opened up the scoring in the top of the 1st inning on a 2-run home run by Kaitlin Dormire, scoring Tara Smith who singled in her at bat.  They continued to score in the second, first on a 2 RBI triple from Smith that scored Brooke Edmonds and Allie Newcomb. Then one more additional run off of the bat of Dormire, scoring Tara Smith who tripled earlier in the inning. 

In the top of the fourth, Tara Smith singled on a bunt and was brought in on Dormire’s second homerun of the game.  Cleary tacked on three more runs in the fifth inning as Morgan Richer and Allie Newcomb singled and advanced on a sacrifice by Edmonds.  In the at bat of Tara Smith, Newcomb and Richer scored as Smith reached safely on a throwing error from Beaver.  Smith would be the final run of the game, scoring on a sac fly by Ashley Valle, to bring the final score to 10-0. 

BEHIND THE BOX SCORE: Cleary tallied fourteen hits in the game as seven of the nine batters had at least one hit, with four of the Lady Cougars earning two or more hits.  The Cougars were led by Kaitlin Dormire who went 3 for 3 with 2 home runs and 5 RBI’s.  Tara Smith finished second in RBI’s with 2 as she went 3 for 4 including a triple. 

On the mound for Cleary was Olivia Silvestri who threw a no-hitter in the 5 inning contest, striking out 6 of the 16 batters faced. 

NEXT UP: Cleary advances to play #1 seeded St. Mary of the Woods at 8:00 pm tonight.  Penn State Beaver now falls into the loser’s bracket and will face the loser of the 2:00 pm game between #4 UMPI and #5 St. Joe’s Vermont.

 

FINAL SCORE: #4 UMPI - 0, #5 College of St. Joseph’s-Vermont - 2

RECORDS: UMPI (25-13) | College of St. Joe’s - Vermont (24-14)

LOCATION: Firestone Stadium in Akron, Ohio

IN BRIEF: The College of St. Joe’s – Vermont took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the 1st inning. Both teams were held scoreless through the next four and a half innings until the Lady Saints were able to get their second run on the board in the top of the 6th inning.  Despite having the last at bat, UMPI wasn’t able to even the game and fell, 2-0.

HOW THEY SCORED: The Fighting Saints opened the scoring in their first at bat as Jacqueline Rossi singled in the opening at bat.  After stealing second, Rossi scored on a Sierra Jaeger single to right field. 

St. Joe’s – Vermont struck again in the top of the sixth when Jenna Crowley singled to center field, scoring Krysta Konderwich who singled through the left side and advanced to second on an error by the left fielder.  The RBI by Crowley would be the final run in the game as the Lady Saints held on to win, 2-0.

BEHIND THE BOX SCORE: St. Joe’s – Vermont tallied 10 hits in the game while committing zero errors.  They were led by Jacqueline Rossi and Karlee Moore who each had two hits in the game.  Sierra Jaeger and Jenna Crowley were credited with an RBI each as well. 

In the circle for the Lady Saints was Maggie Miller who threw a complete game and faced the minimum number of batters (21), giving up just two hits.

Leading UMPI was Nicole Marucci and Dinah Bilodeau who each had a hit in the game.

NEXT UP: The College of St. Joe’s – Vermont will advance in the winners bracket to face the winner of #1 St. Mary of the Woods vs #9 Cleary University tomorrow at 4:00 pm. With the loss, UMPI falls into the loser’s bracket and will square off against #8 Penn State Beaver later tonight at 6:00 pm on the Pony Field at Firestone Stadium.  

 

FINAL SCORE: #3 NHTI - 1, #6 Penn State Hazleton - 2

RECORDS: NHTI (24-3) | Penn State Hazleton (24-14)

LOCATION: Firestone Stadium in Akron, Ohio

IN BRIEF: In the bottom of the first inning, NHTI took the 1-0 lead and held on to it for the next three and a half innings.  In the top of the 5th inning, Penn State Hazleton tied the game at 1-1 on an error by NHTI.  Through seven innings, the teams at a stalemate, the game headed into extra innings.  Hazleton came out on top, 2-1, scoring in the eighth on a sacrifice fly and then holding the Lynx scoreless, despite them loading the bases with 2 outs.

HOW THEY SCORED: After holding the Lady Lions scoreless to open the game, NHTI got on the board in their first at bat on an RBI single from Danyel McNicholas, scoring Emma Gagnon who singled in her at bat. 

Penn State Hazleton got on the board in the fifth inning as Kayla Rhome was walked to start the inning and advanced to second on the sacrifice fly.  Moriah Lynn then reached on an error, allowing Rhome to advance to third.  With runners on the corners, Sara Stauffer hit into a fielder’s choice, allowing Rhome to score and even the game at 1-1.

In extra innings, using the international tie breaker to place a runner on second base, Hazleton scored on a sacrifice fly by Kaitlyn Kaluzny after Moriah Lynn advanced to third on a fly out by Vanessa Michael.  In the bottom of the inning, NHTI was able to load the bases on a single by Jenna Beaulieu, but were unable to capitalize as Hazleton forced NHTI into a ground out to hang on to win, 2-1.  

BEHIND THE BOX SCORE: Penn State Hazleton was led by several players who each contributed a hit in the game, most notably Kaitlyn Kaluzny who went 1 for 3 with 1 RBI as well as the sacrifice fly which would end up to be the game winner.  In the circle for the Lady Lions was PSUAC stand out, Kayla Rhome who pitched all eight innings, giving up 9 hits and striking out 3 of the 36 batters faced.

NHTI was led by Jenna Beaulieu and Emma Gagnon who each had two hits in the extra inning contest.  Seven of the nine batters for the Lady Lynx had at least one hit in the game as Danyel McNicholas was the lone RBI.  In the circle was Torey Lemay, an All-Tournament Team pitcher from last year’s tournament.  She also went eight innings, giving up only 5 hits and striking out 9 of the 33 batters faced.

NEXT UP: With the upset, Hazleton will advance in the winners bracket to face the winner of #2 Carlow vs #10 Penn State Brandywine which will be played tonight at 6:00 pm.  NHTI, who falls into the loser’s bracket, will play #7 Penn College at 8:00 pm tonight on the Pony Field at Firestone Stadium.  

 

FINAL SCORE: #8 Penn State Beaver - 6, #4 UMPI - 2

RECORDS: Penn State Beaver (26-22) | UMPI (25-14)

LOCATION: Firestone Stadium – Pony Field in Akron, Ohio

IN BRIEF: In the first game out of the loser’s bracket, UMPI squared off against Penn State Beaver for the right to remain in the tournament.  After a scoreless three innings to open the game, the Lady Lions got on the board first with a single run in the bottom of the fourth.  The bats came alive for Beaver in the 5th inning as they tallied an additional 5 runs to bring the score to 6-0.  UMPI, refusing to give in, got on the board in the sixth inning scoring a run and then made a surge in the 7th inning scoring another, but the defense of Beaver was stingy as they hung on to win, 6-2.

HOW THEY SCORED: Beaver opened the scoring in the bottom of the fourth inning on an RBI single from Sarah Foose, scoring Searra Thumm who was a pinch runner for Vanessa Jackson who was walked in her at bat. 

In the bottom of the 5th inning, the Lady Lions tallied five more runs starting with an RBI single for Rachael Charlier, scoring Brittany Garza who singled then stole second.  Brenna Cepull was the next Lady Lion to earn RBI’s for Beaver as she doubled to score both Charlier and Vanessa Jackson who singled and walked respectively, in their at bats.  Beaver capped off their 5-run fifth with a 2 RBI single by Sarah Foose, scoring Cepull and Jenna Petrucci after Petrucci singled, stole second and advanced to third on an error by the short stop.

UMPI’s Sara Packard got the Owls on the board with a fly out to center field which scored Dalynn Jacobs who doubled in her at bat earlier in the inning. 

The Owls scored again in the 7th inning on an error by Beaver allowing Dinah Bilodeau to cross the plate as Allie Lopez reached safely on the play.   

BEHIND THE BOX SCORE: Penn State Beaver was led by Brenna Cepull and Sarah Foose who each went 2 for 3 in the game for a combined 3 RBI’s.  Throwing the complete game win was freshman, Sarah Foose who faced 28 batters, giving up just 4 hits.

The Owls were led offensively by Dalynn Jacobs who went 2 for 3 with a double and scoring one run.  Sarah Packard and Allie Lopez earned the teams’ RBI’s for the game.  In the circle for UMPI was Packard who threw six innings, facing 28 batters and striking out three. 

NEXT UP: With the win, #8 Penn State Beaver advances to play PSUAC rival, #10 Penn State Brandywine tomorrow at 10:00 am.  This game is a rematch of the PSUAC Conference Championship.  The UMPI Owls will now compete for ninth place tomorrow at 2:00 pm in their first USCAA Softball Championship Tournament appearance.

 

FINAL SCORE: #2 Carlow - 11, #10 Penn State Brandywine - 3

RECORDS: Carlow (28-12) | Penn State Brandywine (23-17)

LOCATION: Firestone Stadium in Akron, Ohio

IN BRIEF: Carlow University scored 9 runs in the game's first three innings. Penn State Brandywine scored its first two runs in the third inning, and added another in the top of the fourth. Carlow's 9-3 advantage would hold until the bottom of the sixth inning when they would push across 3 more runs to secure a 11-3 victory.

HOW THEY SCORED: Carlow University took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on RBI singles from Kenzie Young and Nicole George. They would extend the lead to 6-0 in the second off RBI's from Young, George, and Brooke Bagnell. RBI doubles from Marla Small and Kelsey Geyer highlighted a 3 run third inning. In the bottom of the sixth, George led off with a single and advanced to third on a double from Sofia Papageorge. Madison Miller and Small followed with singles, scoring George and Papageorge to end the game.

Penn State Brandywine got on the board in the top of the third. The inning was led off by a double from Katy Steffen, who would advance on a wild pitch and score on a sacrifice fly from Katie DeStefano. Arianna Segich followed with a single and stole second base before scoring on an error later in the inning. The Lions would add their third and final run in the fourth inning on a Maddie Malfara triple followed by another Steffen double.

BEHIND THE BOX SCORE: Carlow University set a tournament record with 18 hits in the contest. The top three hitters in their lineup (Small, Geyer, and Young) combined to go 9 for 11 in the game with 5 RBI's and 6 runs scored, consistently setting the table for the Celtic's big innings. George went 3-4 in the game with a team-high 3 RBI's. Haley Stedeford reached base in all four plate appearances, going 3-3 with a walk and 3 runs scored in the game. Jenna Grogan went all 6 innings for the Celtics on the mound, giving up 3 runs (2 earned) and striking out 3.

Penn State Brandywine was led by Steffen, who was 3-3 in the contest with a RBI. DeStephano's sacrifice fly in the third marked the only other RBI in the contest for the Lions. Robyn Gannon, Ashlee Stritzinger, Segich, and Malfara tallied hits in the game.

NEXT UP: Carlow University will advance to the winner's bracket semifinals where they will face #6 Penn State Hazleton on Tuesday at 2:00 PM EST. Penn State Brandywine will shift to the elimination bracket, where they will face #8 Penn State Beaver at 10:00 AM EST on Tuesday at Firestone Stadium. 

 

FINAL SCORE: #3 NHTI - 8, #7 Penn College - 0

RECORDS: NHTI (25-3) | Penn College (17-20)

LOCATION: Firestone Stadium – Pony Field in Akron, Ohio

IN BRIEF: NHTI came out scoring in the game, earning 2 runs in the top of the first inning and three additional runs in the top of the second, building a 5-0 lead.  After a scoreless third, NHTI scored a single run in the fourth and 2 additional runs in the top of the fifth to take the 8-0 lead.  Holding Penn College scoreless in their at bat in the fifth inning, NHTI won by mercy rule, 8-0, after five innings.

HOW THEY SCORED: In the top of the first, on a series of errors, NHTI had runners in scoring position as Kate Andritz hit an RBI single scoring Emma Gagnon and Hannah Seidner.  With Andritz on second, Madison Pellerin singled to score Gagnon.

In the top of the second, after a leadoff ground out, Alyssa Columb, Seidner and Gagnon all singled back-to-back-to-back to load the bases for Jenna Beaulieu who hit a 2 RBI single to extend the NHTI lead to 4-0.  Andritz followed with a groundout RBI, scoring Gagnon before Penn College could earn their final out of the inning. 

In the fourth inning NHTI tallied one run as Hannah Seider scored on a wild pitch after being walked, stealing second and advancing to third on a groundout by Gagnon.

NHTI wrapped up their scoring in the fifth with an RBI single from Courtney Gilman that scored Molly Emerson who singled in her at bat earlier in the inning and a bunt single that scored Gilman two batters later. 

BEHIND THE BOX SCORE: NHTI had all nine starters get a hit in the game as they totaled 10 hits in the game.  Both Jenna Beaulieu and Kate Andritz had 2 RBI’s in the game as three other players had one as well.  On the mound for the Lady Lynx was Hannah Seidner, throwing three innings and giving up just three hits.  She was relieved by Tori Lemay who threw the final two innings, striking out two and giving up one hit.

Penn College was led by Kelsey Gantz who went 2 for 3 in her second game of the day.  Taylor Krow and Maddie Wenk also had hits in the game.  Starting the game for the Lady Wildcats was Amanda Kustanbauter who threw 2 innings, giving up six hits.  In relief was Taylor Brooks who pitched the last three innings giving up four hits. 

NEXT UP: #3 NHTI will now advance to play #9 Cleary University tomorrow at 12:00 p.m. as they battle to come out of the loser’s bracket and keep their championship hopes alive.  With the second loss of the day, Penn College will play for ninth place tomorrow at 2:00 pm. 

 

FINAL SCORE: #1 St. Mary Of The Woods - 3, #9 Cleary - 2

RECORDS: Cleary 12-26; St. Mary Of The Woods 28-6

LOCATION: Firestone Stadium – Akron, Ohio

IN BRIEF: Top-seeded St. Mary Of The Woods put together three hits and scored three runs in the fifth inning and held off a late charge from ninth-seeded Cleary to score a 3-2 win on Monday night in the USCAA Small College World Series quarterfinals.

HOW THEY SCORED: Cleary got on the board in the top of the third inning as Allie Newcomb opened with a double and went to third on a wild pitch one out later.  After a walk to Tara Smith, Kaitlin Dormire drove in Newcomb with a sacrifice fly to left field for an early 1-0 Cougars advantage.

The Pomeroys put together their outburst in the fifth inning as Kerri Schrock started with an infield single and then stole second.  Kelly Combs then followed with a single up the middle to plate Schrock and tie the game at one-all. Jacklyn McClain moved pinch-runner Mariah Stout to second with a sacrifice bunt and Stout advanced to third on a passed ball.  After a walk to Taylor Andrew, she moved to second on a groundout from Kindra Gingerich.  Emma Riffe took the first pitch back up the middle to score both Stout and Andrew to put St. Mary Of The Woods up 3-1.

BEHIND THE BOXSCORE: Cleary starting pitcher Olivia Silvestri held the Pomeroys without a hit in the first four innings to stretch her no-hit streak on the day to nine complete innings.  She opened the tournament with a 10-0 five-inning no-hitter against eighth-seeded Penn State Beaver.

Two-time USCAA Player of the Year Sarah Burnham earned the win on the mound striking out five and allowing six hits in the game.

Cleary made it very interesting in the seventh as Morgan Richer opened with a single before being forced out on a grounder from Newcomb.  An errant throw on the attempt to get Newcomb put her on second with one out.  She went to third on a groundout from Brooke Edmonds and scored on a two-out error to bring the Cougars to within a run at 3-2. Burnham regained composure and struck out Dormire on an off-speed pitch to end the ballgame.

NEXT UP: St. Mary Of The Woods advances in the winners bracket to face fifth-seeded College of St. Joseph's (VT) at 4 pm on Tuesday, while Penn State Brandywine takes on conference foe Penn State Beaver at 10 am in an elimination bracket contest.
